Sapphire blue lakes up in North and our leisure time

Easter greetings from Bornholm!

It's holiday, we took the Peugeot for a ride up to the north, got lost and had supreme lunch afterwards. We've had a splendid time with Percy the lamb and since it's easter we've met many of their friends and even searched for hidden eggs.

This weekend has been awful from the weather perspective - rainy, windy and cold... We even got few flakes of snow!
Despite the bad weather we decided to go for a 3-hour walk up in northern Bornholm for the sightseeing tour with guests from Copenhagen and discover medieval Hammershus ruins (pictures at the bottom of the post).

Nevertheless, it was fantastic, forests here are magical - old trees covered in English Ivy vines like a horror movie scene, meadows full of thimbleweed, a distant sound of waves raging in the sea that's down the cliff...  Amazing! After the horrendous trip, we were greeted by Malenes' mother who warmed us all up, gave us some hot tea/coffee and the best marzipan cake I've ever tasted!
Next up was an ice cream shop in town called Svaneke since we promised kids and then went home - the wind was raging outside we decided to take a nap so we could stay up a bit longer. So here we are now, having a cup of coffee, still a bit tired, but as long as we're on the warm side of the wall, not in the rain it's wonderful.

One of the days we knocked down a house nearby, Kristjan loves to break thinks so he had much fun with the sledgehammer. Percy, of course, was either running around or sleeping in his box. That day we even got a little sunburn on our faces.

We've been working mostly with the root cellar project - dug an enormous hole, put around 40cm of rocks underneath and a layer of cement on top. Now we just have to make the top coat on the floor to make it look even and nice, then we can start building walls from rocks that we gathered from around. That'll be interesting since it is the first time for all of us to do such thing.

Percy (our lamb) is doing wonderful, every morning when we're feeding the animals he's running with us and gaining weight too I believe. He looks way better than his brother who is raised up by his mother. Percy is adventurous, follows us wherever we go, adores Angut (the dog) who's cleaning him sometimes and just loves cuddles and taking naps in the flowerbeds.

One day we were even doing our workout routine outside on the grass when Angut thought that he would fit on my lap - little tip: he's six times bigger than our week old lamb... That was a fun evening and we're now doing some exercises every day to get us in shape - me especially. And in Spain maybe where we don't have to do so much physical work we can start taking longer runs and working out more and also see some progress too. So far we're eating healthy and doing some squats, sit-ups and exercises like that on daily basis. Malene cooks only nutritious food - always half veggies and a nice salad to accompany the dish. We'll see, hope or the best, already feeling healthy and more full of energy with each day!

Little rock pile we built on the northern coast of  Bornholm

Last weekend we took the small Peugeot and set the sails towards Northern Bornholm. The route there goes along the coastline.
Northern Sandvig walking path along the coastline

At first, there are sandy beaches but the more north we get the higher are the hills and rockier are the beaches. We parked our car in the most northern parking lot we could find, the day was partly cloudy with some sun and we started a hiking path on the northern peak of the island - how big can it be, right?
When we had been walking for about 20 minutes we noticed a sign that there was some kind of a historical object in next 900m so we took that path. Meanwhile, we built a stone pile on the hiking route to, fortunately, have some good luck in the future.

We had walked for over 30 minutes from the last sign but nothing was there, so we kept going... There was some weird poop all over the place no matter where we went but no animals. Kristjan saw one old looking lighthouse up on the farthest mountains on our field of view so we decided to go there. At first we walked on the walking path but then, of course, Kristjan saw a smaller path that took us right up the hill from that mountain. I was literally suffering, with smaller legs it's harder you know...
Man got to the lighthouse - man is not amused

When we got up we were officially lost, it was beautiful, windy and frightening. We hadn't seen a person in last hour walking around and not one animal who to judge for the piles of poop all over the way.
Started walking again and found a car route what could lead to our car, for instance, we thought of taking a shortcut through the forest but then we saw those beasts who had pooped throughout our whole path so far... They had enormous horns and they looked fearsome - just cows though.. We took the longer path through the city and finally after 3 hours we were back to our car (at first we thought of taking a 15-minute walk).
Time was perfect for a lunch so we drove around Sandvig in search of (cheap) food. Found one Thai takeaway place and thought "This sounds as cheap as Denmark can sound", drove around a bit since it was located on a one-way road and we surely couldn't see it on our first try and then were a bit desperate finding a place to park. Anyways, the takeout was about the same price as in Estonia 16€ for both of us which included (a medium box) basmati rice and some sauce of your choice (both of us were full after eating half and got lunch for the following day too.

Found the lakes and sat on the edge

After that we drove around a bit and found two opencast lakes which were just wonderful, we could walk right on the edge. Water was sapphire blue and so clear that you could even see the bottom. In the summer it would be a blast to jump in from one of the cliffs because it was really deep too. After that, we came home to eat roasted duck and enjoy the evening with a glass of wine.

It's so beautiful here - cherry trees are blossoming, everything's getting greener and flowers are blooming! Dandelions are covering up the sides of the road and meadows are taken over by thimbleweed. It's a shame we can't see Bornholm in its real glory - tourists, little shops, street food, musicians, cultural events and so much more. It's our last week here now and on next Monday we are travelling to Spain, Malaga already.

I also want to apologise for some not so good quality pictures, they are made with phones. I'm not always carrying my camera with me - especially when we're working and sometimes I just forget to take my memory card with me or charge the batteries - you all know it's just typical me :)

Here is Hammershus - the largest medieval fortification in Scandinavia that lies over 70m above sea level.

The amazing view from Hammershus ruins.

The upcoming weekend will be our last here so we're planning a BBQ party - keep posted and subscribe!
Happy easter to all of you and take care!
